A couple weeks ago, Deanna took me to see Bill Maher live in Vancouver. I've always enjoyed the "Politically Incorrect" show, and was really disappointed when it was cancelled. One of the things that I really liked about it was that it was more of the classic "town hall" kind of meetings that people talk about. Getting 4 people that aren't either career politicians or "journalists" to talk about a topic seems like a good thing to me. I won't argue that the guests were typically "real" people, as the mostly actor/comedian types can't even come close to being considered "real". Nonetheless, more of an open, even (dare I say it) democratic, approach to talking about issues.
So when Bill got cancelled, I was really disappointed. For those who don't know, Bill Maher made a comment that I consider completely reasonable to say, but obviously politically incorrect. He said that terrorists are many things, and a # of comments about the bad things that they are. Hfe also said that one thing that they aren't is cowards. Flying planes into buildings is not an act of cowardice. Though perhaps pushing buttons that launch missiles into targets hundreds of miles away might be.
There was a huge outrage, and disney ended up firing his butt. Which leads to the joke/quote of the night from Bill.
"There's this 9/11 commission that's been going on for a while, and there's been lots of investigation into what went wrong, and fixing things. But isn't there something wrong when I'm ONLY guy in the country that got fired for 9/11??"
Bill even has a blog, though no rss feed yet.
Yeah, he does. It's just not advertised. The URL is http://www.safesearching.com/billmaher/blog/index.rdf and I am subscribed. Thanks for pointing the site out.
