I made my first trip to New Orleans during the week of April 26th. I attended a couple days worth of standards committee meetings and it just so happened (way to go meeting organizers!) that Jazz Fest was that week. I致e put some photos of New Orleans in my photoblog.
What a fun time! The Big Easy was really interesting and great. I ate some wonderful food and listened to some great Jazz. Searching for restaurants and Jazz was a complicated algorithm.. My friend Glenn was also attending the same meetings. He痴 really into good music, reading and food. I believe in specialization, so I just tagged along with Glenn. I wasn稚 disappointed at all.
First day I walked around the French Quarter and had Beignets for the first time. Good, but not quite as great as I had expected. That night痴 entertainment was Charlie Hunter, an awesome 8 string guitar jazz musician. On the web at charliehunter.com.
The next day was a dinner at Bayonne. Very nice French food. I haven稚 gotten the knack of figuring out how to do photos of food properly, as Glenn痴 quail was just awesome but looks kinda gross.
Evening entertainment was Joss Stone. She痴 a 17 year old Brit with pretty darned fine vocals. Very good, but not as inspiring as Charlie Hunter.
Wednesday痴 dinner at Stella was the best of the bunch, and one of the best meals I致e ever had, especially for the price. Again, the pictures really don稚 do the food justice. I致e loved Aussie 2001 Shirazes for a while, evidenced by my Aussie Tasting Notes. The Rusdan was new and great. I壇 give it a 91 rating.
Each of the courses in the meal was great. Especially notable was Glenn痴 soup, which he described as all the Asparagus in Louisiana reduced to one bowl of soup.
Afterwards, we amused ourselves on Bourbon street. They really know how to sell booze there
Thursday痴 lunch was at K単auls, where I had wonderful fried green tomatoes.
Overall, exactly what I had hoped: awesome cuisine and entertainment. I think that Deanna and I have to make the pilgrimage to next year's Jazz fest.
