We saw Vera Drake on the weekend. What an incredible movie. One of the best movies I've seen for a few years. We and our friends talked about this movie for hours and days afterwards - surely one hallmark of a great movie. The acting is immense, Immelda Staunton deserves an Academy nomination at least for her portrayal of the "helper of women in trouble" Vera Drake. I was amazed at how great the entire movie was, from the filming to the acting to the writing, "You want me to forgive my mom?" "Yes. What wouldn't she forgive you?".
Agreeing or not with what Vera does, the portrayal of early 1950s London is also incredible. All the bicycles and the advent of TV and Cars and Washing Machines (because most people don't have them so they deserve to be capitalized), the memories of losing Mummy in the Blitz, the subtlety that the Metropolitan Police deftly exhibit, the choices that the people make, and even the naivety of fessing up early.
Highly recommended to see.
