Continuing to understand the brain through brain injuries, metaphors are in their place, via Sean McGrath.
I absolutely loved his book "A Brief Tour of Human Consciousness" and enjoy his follow on breakthroughs.
My favourite oddity is that of "blindsight". People have suffered damage to their brain such that they can't see. In some very particular cases, these people are able to touch things placed in front of their eyes. That's right, they are completely blind but they can touch something held in front of them 99% of the time. What's up? It turns out that light from our eyes goes to 2 places in the brain. There's a lower spatial awareness function that is separate from vision that enables us to spatially locate and even touch things, even if we can't see them. Wild!
