Thursday nights Deanna and I often have "date night". I was looking for a movie - Faust only has terrible seats left - and I see that there are 3 highly rated shows that looked really interesting, in the abstract. One is about the death of children by an Irish car bomb, another is about a father selling his new child, another is about a child being taken and then the rescue attempt.
Interesting, except we can't watch them.
We now have this really big "lalalalalalalala" with hands covering our ears and eyes reaction when it comes to talking about or watching harm come to children. We just can't do it.
I've always thought that abstraction is one of the cornerstones of Western civilization - beit computing, law, ethics, democracy. And I've prided myself on being a Western man and believe that supporting abstractions leads to a better world for all. Now there's an abstraction that I can't seem to face.
I wonder when this purposeful blinder can be taken off?
