Experiments with Caffeine addiction

| | Comments (0)

Late January we took a trip to the Dominican Republic for my birthday. I had been having problems sleeping through the night, often waking up around 4am sweating. Noon has always been the latest time for a caffeinated bevvie but maybe it was still sticking around.

I decided to try quitting the smack cold-turkey. My own "Carribean Connection" if you will, except I still have more hair than he did. Surrounded by all inclusive amenities like beaches, loungers, beds, room service, palapa bars, etc. seemed like the perfect place to quit the caff. Plus, we could sleep in until whenever so no need for juice to wake up.
The withdrawal went fairly fine on the trip. I didn't really notice missing it actually.

Back home with 6/7ish munchkin early risers and D's 6 am alarm for work was a bit of a different story. Rarely did a caffeinated bean make it into the Bodum in the morning, even at 6:15. I did notice a bit of a lack of energy during the day but I was sleeping through the night better. I still have the bad habit of waking up in the evening, especially around 10pm when it would be great to go to sleep. A couple times I did try caff during the day, and both times I felt a buzz from only 1 bev.

Yesterday, I was pretty tired for some reason. I decided to have TWO regular strength coffees in the morning. First time that's happened in 2 months.

The results? A wake up sweating at 4am. Darned high correlation there.

We did have some friends over and we broke open a recently imported Il Bosco Syrah 1999 (which strangely wasn't quite as good as I remembered it though still very nice) but it's certainly not the first time in 2 months that I've had a few glasses of wine.
