I've been quite enjoying the Northern Voice and Moose camp this year. That is, the parts that I've been able to attend. I've ended up missing big chunks of the conference because we are finally getting our new gas stove and dishwasher. We're pretty excited about these. We picked the Bosch gas and the Miele dishwasher for quietness. We ordered them at the end of December and they *finally* arrived. We applied some pressure to them to, because we are hosting the W3C Web Architecture Board in Vancouver and for dinner on Wednesday night.
We were first told that there would be delivery between 10 and 2pm on friday. Then we were told that the installer would arrive at 4:30. Both Deanna and I made the mistake of assuming that meant the first plan had changed. Deanna took the kids out to her parents for the friday and saturday and I planned to be home by 4:30.
At 2pm, in the middle of PhotoCamp, I got a phone call from the delivery guys. They are at our place, where are we? Ooops! Quick drive home, let them in, they drop off the new stuff and take away the old stove. All finished by 3pm. I thought it would be best to work at home waiting for the installer rather than make the 25 minute drive back.
At 6pm, the installer finally shows up. Argh. I could have gone back for a couple hours more of the conference and socializing. That also meant that I missed the 6-8pm party.
But wait, there's more. When our gas line to the kitchen was installed, the bozos that did it did not install a shut-off valve. Oh, they also crazily just crimped the end. The installer didn't have a shut offf valve and the store he normally uses for these things was closed by 8pm.
That meant a visit the next morning. He said he'd arrive somewhere around 9, 9:30 and he'd give me a call before he arrived. I had a glorious sleep-in until 8 am and then I went out for a breakfast and read of the paper. I made sure my cell phone was charged and on loud ring mode. At 9:25 I wondered what was happening so I was going to call him. But argh!! again, my phone had turned itself into silent mode and I'd missed 2 phone calls including him at my house at 9:10 going where are you?
A quick phone call and he's coming back. Finally done at 10 am and I head out to Northern Voice.
After all this, I effectively got 1/2 of day 1 and about 3/4 of day 2. And completely installed stove and dishwasher.
