Social Media types are spending a lot of time awarding themselves

I've now seen my 10th?  20th?  list/award ceremony of "most influential social media/bloggers/twitterers/networkers" in the past couple months.  The latest is Canada's Most Influential Social Medial Individuals - Semi Finalists Announced. I'm glad that media is evolving and connecting people, but all this social media mediaizing about themselves as a way of gaining traffic has become nauseating. There's an impolite term that starts with circle that this seems very akin to. Now we need to resolve all these different awards so soon there will be an "Academy" to have experts decide, and maybe a "People's Choice". Blech.

It's just a sign of a young field. I remember saying on my panel at the first Northern Voice in 2005 that blogging is so new that we still have blogging conferences -- but does anyone have conferences about how to use the telephone? Same with awards. If the phone were new today, we'd probably be giving out "most polite wrong number answerer" awards too.
